How to add WooCommerce gift message with a plugin

Let me show you a few steps to add a new field for getting messages!

1. Get the free plugin

   First, you need the free Flexible Product Fields - a WooCommerce plugin to add more fields to your products.

2. Plugin configuration

   Once you have the plugin installed and activated, let's configure it!

   👉🏼  Go to Products → Product Fields in your WordPress menu to set up a new field group:

   

3. Select the products for the gift message

   You need to specify the product(s) for which a customer will be able to order a gift message.

   

   💡 In the free version of the Flexible Product Fields, you have to specify products one by one. You may select products from the whole category or all products in the PRO version of the plugin.

4. Show the gift message field on the product page

   Once you configured where to show the group fields, you can create and configure the fields. You can use any label you want. It will show on the product page and in the cart.

5. That's it!

A message attached to a product like a letter, card, or engraving may be an additional cost for your store.

It is a good idea to transfer this cost to your customers. You can set any price you want for such a feature so you can make some profit out of it, too.

As you can see in the screenshot below, the Price type and Price settings appear after activating the PRO version.

This is how the text field looks on the product page. Of course, when the text field is empty (there's no message typed by a customer), then the standard price value will be used.

The moment your customer starts typing in the text field, an additional cost will be added to the product price.

Conditional Logic for WooCommerce product fields

Look, the text field takes up a lot of space.

Not everyone will be interested in this feature so why show it to them?

I think that it is a good idea to place a checkbox on the product page and to show the text field for gift messages only when the checkbox has been checked.

✅  Fields like this are really easy to set up. You need to add a checkbox field and then you need to activate conditional logic in the gift message field. This is a PRO feature.
